12 Márta 2014, 17:45

The Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht today, Wednesday, 12th March 2014, presented a donation of books, CDs and DVDs to the Irish Centre, London to assist it in establishing a Library at the centre.

The books were donated by members and staff of the Oireachtas, Irish publishers, various institutions and companies from around the country and from the general public.

To date, the Committee has collected in excess of 6,000 books and 1,000 CDs and DVDs of Irish interest and has also secured subscriptions from over 30 Irish newspapers and magazines, free shelving and a digitised computer system for the library all free of charge.

Michael McCarthy, Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, said: “During a visit to the Irish Centre in London last year, I met with the Chief Executive of the Centre, David Barlow, and his team and I witnessed the excellent work they are doing on behalf of the Irish community in London.

“I was told that the Irish Centre in London was establishing a library that will be a resource to the Irish community in London and our Committee agreed that it was something with which we would like to be associated. The Committee agreed to sponsor a once-off book donation scheme among members and staff of the Houses and decided that it would ask each member of the Houses and each staff member to donate one book to the library in the Irish Centre in Camden. It also asked a number of Irish publishers and institutions to donate books, CDs and DVDs to this worthy cause.

“The response has been phenomenal. To date, the Committee has collected in excess of 6,000 books and 1,000 CDs and DVDs of Irish interest and has also secured subscriptions from over 30 Irish newspapers and magazines, free shelving and a digitised computer system for the library all free of charge. In addition to this An Post is shipping the books and recordings from the Houses of the Oireachtas to London free of charge. Today, we are delighted to officially present the donation to the Irish Centre.”
