Health Committee to hold hearings on suicide

12 Márta 2014, 15:12

The Joint Committee on Health and Children will hold hearings on suicide tomorrow, Thursday, 13th March 2014 when it will meet with Professor Ella Arensman and representatives from University College Cork, Coroners Society of Ireland, Central Statistics Office, Headstrong, Console, Aware, Pieta House, the Irish Association of Suicidology and the National Office for Suicide Prevention.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “More people die by suicide than lose their lives through road accidents. The issues and circumstances that lead to a person taking their own life are many and complex and tackling the issue of suicide requires interventions from all levels of society, including community, voluntary and statutory bodies. Tomorrow, we will hear from a variety of individuals and organisations working to promote suicide prevention policies. The hearings will feed into a report on suicide that is being prepared by Committee member Senator John Gilroy.”

The schedule for tomorrow’s meeting is:

Session A: 9:30 am

Professor Ella Arensman, University College Cork, Coroners Society of Ireland, Central Statistics Office, Headstrong

Session B: 11:30 am
