Communications Committee to meet RTÉ Director General

25 Márta 2014, 13:48

RTÉ Director General Noel Curran and senior management are before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to consider the national broadcaster's strategic plan from 2012 to 2017.

25 March 2014

The meeting is also likely to consider the fallout from RTÉ's financial settlement following the Saturday Night Show of 11 January. The issue of staffing and pay levels at the station is also on the agenda.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Our Committee has an important oversight role in the general policy direction of public bodies and looks forward to meeting Noel Curran and his team tomorrow. Committee Members are broadly supportive of a vigorous and dynamic public service broadcaster. The meeting tomorrow provides an opportunity to explore RTÉ's strategic plan, which sets out the direction for the broadcaster in the coming years up to 2017. In an ever more interconnected world, the Committee looks forward to hearing how an evolving RTÉ can continue to make a valued contribution to Irish life.
\"The Committee will also wish to assess progress in placing RTÉ on a sustainable financial footing. In previous meetings, Mr Curran has admitted that RTÉ has overpaid its top broadcasters in the past, and we will wish to assess the current levels of remuneration of its most high-profile figures. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to assess RTÉ's rationale for paying €85,000 damages to complainants following the Saturday Night Show of 11 January.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 26 March at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
