Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss moves on Cypriot re-unification

25 Márta 2014, 15:24

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade will tomorrow afternoon meet with Dr Michalis Stavrinos, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Ireland to consider the current situation in Cyprus, and prospects for the island's future.

25 March 2014

The meeting with the Ambassador follows the resumption of talks between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders earlier this year, which are aimed at re-uniting the island. Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart Dervis Erogluy issued a Joint Statement, following a meeting at a UN compound in Nicosia on 11 February.

Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “The resumption of structured talks between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders is to be warmly welcomed. The Joint Statement issued following their meeting notes that the status quo is no longer acceptable. It reflects the determination of both leaders to resume negotiations in a results-oriented manner. Committee Members are encouraged by the goodwill apparent on both sides to work with purpose towards a lasting settlement. Tomorrow, our Committee will have an opportunity to engage with Dr Michalis Stavrinos, Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Ireland, on the current outlook and prospects for re-unification in the longer term.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 25 March at 2:30 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. It can be viewed live on Oireachtas UPC Channel 207 and online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
