Education Committee to consider RSCI accreditation in Bahrain

1 Aib 2014, 17:26

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection will tomorrow hear from a number of parties in relation to the accreditation of the Royal College of Surgeons’ facility in Bahrain.

1 April 2014

Some time ago, the Committee heard a presentation in relation to human rights concerns arising in Bahrain, and tomorrow's meeting will enable the the Royal College of Surgeons, the Medical Council, the NUI and the Department of Education and Skills to respond to the issues raised previously.

Joanna Tuffy TD, Chair of the Committee says: “The Committee has been closely following the issue of accreditation at the RCSI’s Bahrain campus since human rights concerns were raised during the Arab Spring in 2011. In November, we heard from Ceartas, Irish Lawyers for Human Rights, who alleged that the facility in Bahrain does not meet Irish standards of medical teaching. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to hear from the RCSI and other key stakeholders give their perspectives on this serious matter.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 2 April at 1 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.
