Justice Committee to discuss human trafficking with transition year students

1 Aib 2014, 10:05

Transition Year Students from Scoil Phobail Bhéara, Castletownbere, County Cork will address the Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality on their project report on the issue of human trafficking Life Leeches - Trafficking Changes Lives tomorrow, Wednesday, 2nd April 2014.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “We are looking forward to the presentation from the Young Social Innovators group of transition year students from Scoil Phobail Bhéara in Castletownbere. We are particularly interested in getting their perspectives on the issue of human trafficking and its impact on people. Human trafficking for sexual exploitation or forced labour is a form of slavery that reduces people to commodities that can be bought and sold. It is a gross violation of human rights that causes suffering and misery for millions. A key part of the fight against human trafficking is through education and through raising awareness about the prevalence of the problem. With their project, the students of Scoil Phobail Bhéara are not only raising their own awareness of the issue, they are informing and educating others and are acting as positive agents for change in society.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 2pm tomorrow, Wednesday, 2nd April 2014.

Following this meeting, the Select Committee will consider a number of motions at 3.15pm. The motions are:

(i) Motion: Proposal that Dáil Éireann approves Ireland’s participation in an EDA Category B project on Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Manual Neutralisation Techniques pursuant to section 2 of the Defence (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009; and
(ii) UN Motion: Proposal that Dáil Éireann approves the report by the Minister for Defence regarding service by the Defence Forces with the United Nations in 2013
