Transport Committee to hear from Hauliers on UK HGV levy

1 Aib 2014, 16:58

Haulier representatives are before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow to consider the new HGV levy on UK roads, which may cost up to £1,000 per year.

1 April 2014

From today, heavy goods vehicles registered outside Britain and Northern Ireland are being charged up to £10 a day to drive on UK roads.

Representatives from the Irish Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association will outline their concerns to the Committee. Other issues in the sector may also be raised.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Tomorrow, our Committee will have an opportunity to hear from key haulier representatives on the new HGV levy which enters into force today. The changes will have a particularly adverse impact on truckers in border counties, which could lead to an extra cost of £1,000 per year. It may also hinder the further development of North/South trade. We look forward to hearing from road hauliers on what steps might be taken to mitigate the impact of the levy.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 2 April at 11  am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
