Finance Committee to discuss mortgage arrears with Bank of Ireland

9 Aib 2014, 17:34

Bank of Ireland chief executive Richie Boucher will come before the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform tomorrow, Thursday 10th April, 2014 as part of its hearings on mortgage arrears.

Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch TD said: “Tomorrow, we will continue our series of hearings on mortgage arrears and the resolution process to deal with the issue of arrears by providing long-term solutions. Bank of Ireland chief executive Richie Boucher will come before the Committee to outline how the bank is meeting its targets of providing sustainable mortgage solutions for distressed borrowers and dealing with the new insolvency legislation and the Insolvency Service of Ireland. It’s almost one year to the day that the banks were issued with resolution targets initially set out in the Keane Report. The Committee will be keen to know how these resolution options are being availed of by the bank as well as other innovative approaches for homeowners who are genuinely seeking long term solutions to their problems.

According to the latest figures released by the Central Bank, the numbers of homeowners in mortgage arrears of over three months has fallen for the first time in almost five years. However, those figures mask a very worrying trend in long term arrears whereby those behind in repayments by more than two years has risen. Behind these statistics are real people struggling to make ends meet and it is important that we find sustainable, long-term solutions for these people.”

This meeting will start at 10am on Thursday, 10th April 2014 in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000.
