EU Affairs Committee to consider upcoming European elections

6 Beal 2014, 12:03

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will this afternoon consider the upcoming European Parliament elections with Minister of State with responsibility for European Affairs Paschal Donohoe TD.

6 May 2014

The meeting will also consider the forthcoming General Affairs Council meeting, to be held in Brussels later in the month.

The meeting forms part of a series of events taking place in the Dáil and Seanad chambers and the Oireachtas Committees to mark Europe Week. Europe Day takes place this Friday and every 9 May as an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “Europe Day 2014 takes place in  the run in to crucial European Parliament elections on 23 May. Tomorrow’s meeting with Minister Donohoe is likely to consider the extent to which pan-European issues will figure in the campaign. The profile of European political groupings, likely turnout in the election and the new Parliament’s influence on selection process for the next European Commission may also be considered.”

“Minister Donohoe’s presence will also provide an opportunity for the Committee to assess the approach he proposes to take at the upcoming General Affairs Council meeting. The meeting takes place in Brussels on 13 May and will consider the European Semester, Justice and Home Affairs proposals and progress on climate and energy targets, in preparation for the European Council summit that will take place on 26 and 27 June.”

The meeting takes place this afternoon Tuesday 6 May 2014 at 2 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
