Justice Committee to consider General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Community Sanctions) Bill

The Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will start pre-legislative scrutiny on the General Scheme of the Criminal Justice (Community Sanctions) Bill at its meeting tomorrow, 7th May 2014.

Those attending the meeting include: representatives from Facing Forward; the Law Society of Ireland; Rape Crisis Network Ireland; and Restorative Practice Strategic Forum.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “This new legislation will replace the Probation of Offenders Act 1907 with modern provisions dealing with community sanctions and the role of the Probation Service in the criminal justice system. The Minister for Justice has referred the General Scheme of the Bill to our Committee on Justice for pre-legislative consideration. Tomorrow, we will get the perspectives of Facing Forward; the Law Society of Ireland; Rape Crisis Network Ireland; and the Restorative Practice Strategic Forum on the proposed legislation.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 2pm on Wednesday, 7th May 2014.
