Social Protection Committee to consider carers’ supports

6 Beal 2014, 17:29

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow meets with the Carers Association to consider the supports and services for carers and for children with special needs.

6 May 2014

The Carers Association is Ireland's national voluntary organisation for and of family carers in the home.

Joanna Tuffy TD, Chair of the Committee says: “Tomorrow, the Committee will have an opportunity to hear from the Carers Association on how the existing supports for carers of children with special needs might be bolstered. Their presentation is expected to touch on income support for family carers, entitlements to young adult school leavers and labour market training and activation. We look forward to hearing the perspective of an organisation that represents about almost 190,000 carers nationwide.”

Separately, the Committee will consider the ease of access of young disabled people to education, training and activation programmes with WALK representatives.

Deputy Tuffy continues: “Based in Walkinstown, WALK provides a wide range of quality services for people with disabilities.  The Committee looks forward to the opportunity to engage with WALK representatives on their work and where policy of the Departments of Social Protection and Education and Skills need to be enhanced for their clients. Their presentation is likely to call for genuinely equal routes into employment for young disabled people.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 7 May at 1 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.
