The implementation of the new Junior Cycle Student award will be on the agenda of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow when it meets with the Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn TD.

Minister Quinn is expected to remind the Committee of the rationale for the reforms in the Junior Cycle and outline the progress on their implementation since they were outlined in October 2012.
Joanna Tuffy TD, Chair of the Committee says: “Reform of the Junior Cycle has provoked widespread public debate in recent months. Tomorrow, Minister Quinn will have the opportunity to remind the Committee of the benefits of the proposed changes and on progress to date on their implementation. In the face of resistance to many of the changes from teachers’ unions, we will be keen to explore with the Minister the key issues relating to the implementation of the Junior Cycle, and consider how a pathway might be found to overcome these challenges. As a Committee, we have already considered the reform of the Junior Cycle generally, and hosted a lively and engaging discussion last year with a wide range of stakeholders on the status of history in the Junior Cycle. Tomorrow's meeting will be an opportunity to find out more from Minister Quinn on the issues raised.”
