EU Affairs Committee to hear from Irish in Britain CEO on voting rights

12 Beal 2014, 16:37

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow continue its series of hearings into the voting rights of citizens within the European Union, when CEO of Irish in Britain Jenny McShannon addresses the Committee. Dr Adrian Kavanagh, who lectures at NUI Maynooth's Department of Geography, will also engage with the Committee.

12 May 2014

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “The successful State Visit by President Michael D. Higgins had a particular focus on the Irish diaspora in Britain, and illuminated the deep connections its members have maintained with Ireland over the decades. Irish in Britain, which describes itself as the lynchpin of the Irish Community in Britain, have been assisting in the campaign for the right of Irish citizens living outside the island of Ireland to have an input into the Irish democratic process. We look forward to engaging with Jenny McShannon tomorrow to hear more on this issue. The Committee will also hear from Dr Adrian Kavanagh of NUI Maynooth, a leading expert on political geography, for his views. ”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 13 May at 1 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
