Transport Committee to hear from Mountain Rescue Ireland on funding challenges

13 Beal 2014, 15:02

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow hear from Mountain Rescue Ireland on the challenges on maintaining rescue teams around the country.

13 May 2014

Mountain Rescue Ireland is a registered charity representing the twelve voluntary mountain rescue teams on the island.  It is a 24 hour 999/112 emergency service provided by volunteers and funded by government funds and public donations.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Tomorrow we will meet with representatives from Mountain Rescue Ireland who will outline the invaluable work of the twelve mountain rescue teams on the island. Their presentation tomorrow is expected to focus on the increasingly challenging financial situation in sustaining ten mountain rescue teams based south of the border. With one third of the funding provided by the state, about €470,000 has to be raised by voluntary subscription annually. The Committee will carefully examine the case for enhanced public funding of the sector.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 14 May at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
