EU Affairs Committee to meet Minister Bruton for update on US Trade talks

26 Beal 2014, 10:49

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs tomorrow to discuss ongoing trade talks between the European Union and the United States.

26 May 2014

This is the initial step in the Committee's consideration of this important issue.

Negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) began in July 2013 and the fifth round of the talks took place in the US last week.

Chairman of the Committee, Dominic Hannigan TD says: “The Committee looks forward to the opportunity to review progress on the transatlantic negotiations with Minister Bruton tomorrow. The Irish Presidency of the European Union during 2013 played a key role in getting the talks off the ground. As negotiations are now gathering pace and are particularly focussed on the elimination of existing regulatory barriers to help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) on both sides of the Atlantic, this is an opportune time for the Committee to focus on the issue. We will have the opportunity to discuss with Minister Bruton the opportunities and potential challenges  as the negotiations progress.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 27 May at 2 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
