Education and Social Protection Committee to consider implementation of Youth Guarantee

27 Beal 2014, 16:24

The implementation of the Youth Guarantee is on the agenda of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow when it meets with officials from the Department of Social Protection.

27 May 2014

The Guarantee is aims to ensure young people receive a quality offer of employment or of continued education, an apprenticeship or traineeship within four months of becoming unemployed.

Joanna Tuffy TD, Chair of the Committee says: “Youth unemployment is one of the biggest challenges facing Ireland and the European Union today. As the experience of a significant number of other EU member states shows, Youth Guarantees can play an important part in addressing youth unemployment. If properly focused and resourced they can also have a positive impact in reducing the number of young people not in employment, education or training.

\"In November 2013, the Committee heard presentations regarding the Guarantee from the Department of Social Protection and a number of groups ahead of the preparation of the Implementation Plan on the matter. Department Officials are expected to update the Committee on the Plan, which was published in January 2014. The Plan is focussed on two specific cohorts of young people, those under 18 years of age who have not completed secondary education; and those aged between 18 and 24 years who are unemployed for four months or more. As a Committee we will be keen to engage with the Officials on the progress being made to secure an effective, meaningful and robust Youth Guarantee.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 28 May at 1 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
