Justice Committee continues hearings on Garda oversight

27 Beal 2014, 13:49

The Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will continue its hearings on submissions received on the effectiveness of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 in relation to oversight of An Garda Síochána tomorrow, Wednesday, 28th May 2014.

Committee Chairman David Stanton TD said: “Dáil Éireann requested that the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality to review the effectiveness of the legislation related to oversight of An Garda Síochána. We sought submissions from interested groups or individuals on the effectiveness of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 where it relates to the oversight of An Garda Síochána, including, in particular, the powers and remit of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

“Tomorrow, we will get the perspectives of Baroness Nuala O'Loan; Nóirín O'Sullivan, Acting Garda Commissioner; and Ronan Brady, Lecturer in Journalism, Griffith College, Dublin on the effectiveness of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 in relation to oversight of An Garda Síochána.

“As the first Police Ombudsman in the North from 2000-2007, we are delighted that Baroness Nuala O’Loan has agreed to address the Committee and we welcome her contribution. We’re also looking forward to hearing from Acting Garda Commissiner Nóirín O'Sullivan who is a hugely knowledgeable police officer having being a member of An Garda Síochána since 1981, and also getting the views of Ronan Brady, an experienced journalist, lecturer and member of the National Union of Journalists on the legislation.

“The submissions we received and the hearings tomorrow may help inform any report we will bring forward.”

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 28th May 2014 at 2pm in Committee Room 2, LH2000, Leinster House, Dublin 2.

Proceedings will also be carried on UPC channel 207. Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
