Committee Chairman David Stanton TD said: “Dáil Éireann requested that the Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality to review the effectiveness of the legislation related to oversight of An Garda Síochána. We sought submissions from interested groups or individuals on the effectiveness of the Garda Síochána Act 2005 where it relates to the oversight of An Garda Síochána, including, in particular, the powers and remit of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. Already we have met with a number of groups and individuals to get their perspectives in relation to oversight of An Garda Síochána.

This week, we will travel to Belfast, Edinburgh and Glasgow to meet with members of policing boards and authorities as well as fellow parliamentarians in neighbouring jurisdictions. As we review our own policing oversight, it is both timely and opportune to view at first hand other models and meet those involved in their administration. It is important that we examine the experience from other jurisdictions and consider potential models for policing oversight.”

“Our meetings this week along with the submissions we have received and our hearings may help inform any report we will bring forward.”
