Transport Committee to discuss tourism gains of recent years

17 Meith 2014, 16:38

Representatives from Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland will tomorrow meet with the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to consider the performance of the tourism industry’s marketing strategies.

16 June 2014

Fáilte Ireland is the National Tourism Development Authority tasked with guiding and promoting tourism as a leading indigenous component of the Irish economy. Meanwhile , Tourism Ireland is the agency responsible for marketing the island of Ireland as a holiday destination overseas.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Tourism is an important indigenous industry, employing thousands of people around the country in rural and urban areas. After four difficult years, Irish tourism experienced an upturn in fortunes in 2013, with the ‘Gathering’ making a significant contribution to an increase in numbers from most markets. Initiatives in 2014, such as the opening of the Wild Atlantic Way, are building on the gains of last year.

“Further growth in tourism would bring major economic benefits and help to sustain and create jobs in every corner of the country. We look forward to engaging with Tourism representatives tomorrow to assess progress so far in 2014 and what targeted efforts might be made, particularly in the domestic and British markets.”

Separately, the Committee will consider a series of EU legislative proposals in the area of energy, communications and natural reources, including:

  • COM (2014)15 – related to policy framework for climate and energy;
  • COM (2014)111 – related to responsible sourcing of minerals in areas of risk, and
  • COM (2014)187 –related to cable way installation.

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 18 June at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting will commence with scrutiny of EU proposals in private session, with the outcomes of these discussions presented by the Chairman in public. Public proceedings can be viewed here.
