Statement from Dáil Committee on Procedure and Privileges

19 Meith 2014, 16:51

Further to recent commentary regarding a request from PAC (Public Accounts Committee) to CPP (Committee on Procedure and Privileges) seeking powers of compellability in accordance with the Houses of the Oireachtas (Inquiries, Privileges and Procedures) Act 2013, CPP wishes to clarify the following.

Under the 2013 Act, it is necessary for CPP to give its consent to a committee which wishes to issue directions to compel witnesses and evidence.  In this context, CPP at its last meeting gave careful and detailed consideration to the submissions made by PAC.
However, the relevant submissions lacked sufficient detail to enable CPP to discharge properly its obligations under the 2013 Act and Standing Orders.
CPP has therefore written to PAC seeking further information. It is now a matter for the PAC to provide the necessary information to enable CPP to make a determination on the request in accordance with the legislation and Standing Orders.
