Environment Committee to discuss the benefits of volunteering on community development

23 Meith 2014, 12:57

The benefit of volunteering to community development and for wider society will be the focus of the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht Committee tomorrow, Tuesday, 24th June 2014 when it meets with Yvonne McKenna, chief executive of Volunteer Ireland.

Michael McCarthy TD, Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, said: “Volunteer Ireland is the national volunteer development agency and a support body for all local Volunteer Centres and Volunteer Information Services in Ireland. As well as working to promote and celebrate volunteering in Ireland through campaigns such as National Volunteering Week and the Volunteer Ireland Awards, it supports national volunteer-involving organisations by offering bespoke training, consultancy and an extensive range of online guides and resources on engaging volunteers. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to hear in greater detail about the work of Volunteer Ireland and discuss how volunteering can help build a better Irish society and assist in community development.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.15pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 24th June 2014.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
