Health Committee to focus on provision of Epinephrine Auto-Injectors

23 Meith 2014, 12:48

The provision of Epinephrine Auto-Injectors, sometimes known by the brand name EpiPens, for the treatment of allergic reactions will be on the agenda of the Committee on Health and Children tomorrow, Tuesday, 24th June 2014 when it meets with Professor Jonathan Hourihane, Dr Michael Byrne and representatives from the Irish Medicines Board.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “Severe allergic reactions can have devastating consequences for those affected and immediate access to medication can be a lifesaving intervention.  An epinephrine autoinjector is a medical device used to deliver a measured dose of epinephrine for the treatment of an allergic reaction. Groups have been campaigning for a change in the law which would allow those who require this lifesaving intervention to access epinephrine autoinjectors in schools, crèches and restaurants. Tomorrow, we will meet some of those campaigning for change, along with Dr Professor Jonathan Hourihane, Dr Michael Byrne and representatives from the Irish Medicines Board to discuss the provision of the devices.”

This meeting will be held in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000 at 5.15pm on Tuesday, 24th June 2014.
