Members of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade met this afternoon with Mr Faik Nerweyi, Iraq's Ambassador to Ireland.

Members of the Oireachtas Committee are well aware of the Isis insurgency which has killed thousands of Iraqis and forced many more to flee their homes. The Committee took the opportunity to meet with Ambassador Nerweyi, who is based in London, when he presented his credentials to President Higgins.
Ambassador Nerweyi emphasised the need to find a political solution to the ongoing problems in Iraq and to achieve this he further stressed the importance of putting in place the constitutional and other regulatory systems necessary to unite all of its people.
Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “The deteriorating security situation in Iraq has been the source of grave concern to Committee Members. However, having listened to the Ambassador, the members of the committee acknowledge the importance of putting in place the necessary road-map that would enable a process for a lasting and permanent settlement to be put in place. Central to achieving this, he continued, was the need to emphasise the importance of dialogue, both as a means to ending the current conflict and as a way of reaching a long term political solution. He further recognised the need for every encouragement to be given by the European Union to all of the parties involved in Iraq to achieving this objective\".
