2 Iúil 2014, 16:34

Fertility issues in Ireland, the cost of blindness in Ireland and scrutiny of EU legislative proposals will be on the agenda of the Committee on Health and Children tomorrow, Thursday, 3rd July 2014.

The schedule for tomorrow’s is:

Session A: 9:30 a.m. - 11.15 am

(i)    Scrutiny of EU legislative proposals: Schedule A: COM(2014)219 re. Mobile Health and COM(2014)246 re. scientific examination of questions relating to food;

(ii)    Fertility issues in Ireland - National Infertility Support and Information Group; and

Session B: 11.30 am

The cost of blindness in Ireland - The National Vision Coalition.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “The ability to have a child is taken for granted by most people and by society in general, but one couple in six will not conceive on their own and will seek help to achieve a pregnancy. Tomorrow, we will hear from the National Infertility Support and Information Group, a voluntary organisation, that was established in 1996 by a group of dedicated people who needed and wanted to be in contact with others who understood their grief.

Following this meeting, the Committee will discuss the cost of blindness in Ireland with the National Vision Coalition.  The National Vision Coalition is an alliance of healthcare professionals, those working in the sight loss community, and, most importantly, service users that were brought together in 2012 by NCBI and Fighting Blindness. In April 2014, the National Vision Coalition launched The Economic Cost and Burden of Eye Diseases and Preventable Blindness in Ireland. At our meeting we will have an opportunity to discuss the work of the National Vision Coalition and consider its report, in particular the costs to the State of vision impairment and what kind of savings could be made from early intervention.”

This meeting starts in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000 at 9.30am on Thursday, 3rd July 2014.
