EU Affairs Committee to discuss Italian Presidency Priorities with Ambassador

7 Iúil 2014, 14:53

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow afternoon meet with the Italian Ambassador to Ireland Giovanni Adorni Braccesi to discuss his country’s priorities for its forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

7 July 2014

Italy assumed the rotating six month presidency from Greece on 1 July.

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD says: “On behalf of this Committee, I wish Italy well in delivering on an ambitious programme for the next six months. Their Presidency is aiming to build on some of the gains of the past year, in further promoting economic growth and job creation, with the aim to foster an “industrial renaissance” to boost small business in particular. The Presidency will aim to revitalise the Europe 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, an issue which will be a priority for the Joint Committee in the autumn.

“The Italians are also expected to focus on enhancing civic engagement with the EU by being more responsive to citizens’ everyday problems, concerns and insecurities. The Presidency wants to cut red tape and promote transparency, accountability and digitalisation. The Presidency is also expected to focus on Europe's role in the wider world, with a particular emphasis tackling challenges in regions bordering the EU such as the Mediterranean. We look forward to engaging with Ambassador Braccesi on these priorities in detail at tomorrow's meeting.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 8 July at 2 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000.  Committee proceedings can be followed live here
