Committee to consider petition relating to Central Bank secrecy

8 Iúil 2014, 18:38

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will tomorrow afternoon consider a petition in relation to the strict professional secrecy provisions in the Central Bank Act 1942.

8 July 2014

Alan Jackman, who made the petition, will address the Committee.

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD says: “Tomorrow, the Committee will have an opportunity to hear from an individual citizen Alan Jackman, who has made a petition in relation to the secrecy provisions in Central Bank legislation. At the heart of the petition is a call for greater transparency in the management of our financial system. The petition argues that the investigations undertaken by the Financial Regulator, including a sanction inquiry hearing, should be made more public.
“The Committee is concerned, as part of its public oversight remit, that the updating of the financial legislation, particularly in relation to the Financial Ombudsman, has not yet been completed. The Committee is also aware of the call by the Finance Committee, in a recent report on FOI legislation, to examine and update these professional secrecy provisions as a matter of urgency. With public confidence in our banking system low following the financial crisis of recent years, the Committee looks forward to exploring the merits of Mr Jackman’s petition in detail at tomorrow’s meeting.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 9 July in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. Public proceedings can be viewed live on Oireachtas UPC Channel 207 and online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
