Education Committee to consider apprenticeship review

8 Iúil 2014, 17:19

Representatives from the Department of Education and Skills, ICTU and IBEC are before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow to consider the Review of apprenticeships.

8 July 2014

The Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn TD announced a Review of Apprenticeships in May 2013 and, following publication of the Review’s report in December, published a plan for the implementation of its recommendations last week.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy says: “Given that the implementation plan to renew the apprenticeship system in Ireland has just been published, tomorrow’s meeting is a timely opportunity to engage with Department Officials and union and business representatives on the issue. Department Officials are expected to outline the rationale for renewing apprenticeships in Ireland, given weaknesses exposed in the previous model by the economic downturn, including the need for a closer alignment with the current needs of the Irish labour market and the structural reform that has occurred in relation to education and training. Both ICTU and IBEC representatives are expected to outline how a broader, more flexible apprenticeship system can be nurtured. We look forward to constructive discussion on how this critical component of our training system can be renewed, broadened and enhanced to deliver a robust model to underpin economic growth and job creation into the future.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow at 1pm Wednesday 25 June in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. The meeting will be carried live on Oireachtas UPC Channel 207 and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
