The Ambassador of Iran to Ireland Javad Kachoueian is before the Committee on Foreign Affairs on Wednesday to consider the current situation in the Middle East Region.

The Committee is also likely to raise Ireland’s trade relationship with Iran, which currently amounts to about €50 million annually.
Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting with Ambassador Kachoueian will be an opportunity to raise a number of issues of importance to both our countries. A delegation from our Committee visited Tehran in January, where we enjoyed positive and open dialogue with fellow parliamentarians, senior Ministers, government officials and business leaders.
“Iran is a significant regional player in the Middle East Region and the Committee will be keen to assess its approach in stemming the current humanitarian crises in both Syria and Iraq. In Tehran in January, Committee Members were forthright in urging Iran to use its influence to promote peace in the region. The human rights situation within Iran, and in particular the regime’s harsh treatment of political dissidents and minorities, is also likely to be raised at tomorrow’s meeting.
“Ambassador Kachoueian has previously spoken of the potential to grow bilateral trade between Ireland and Iran to one billion euros per year so we will be keen to explore with him the steps required for both countries to realise this ambitious target.”
The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 9 July in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 at 2:30 pm. The meeting can be viewed online here.
