Foreign Affairs Committee raises concerns on Iranian influence in Middle East region with Ambassador

9 Iúil 2014, 17:09

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade has this afternoon raised a number of concerns with the Ambassador of Iran to Ireland Javad Kachoueian in relation to his country’s role in the Middle East region.

9 July 2014

Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says:  “Iran is a significant regional player in the Middle East Region and the Committee Members were keen to assess its approach in stemming the current humanitarian crises in both Syria and Iraq. Committee Members forcefully raised the issue of support for the Assad regime in Syria and were keen that Iran do all it can to provide for an end to the humanitarian crisis there. Committee Members were also forthright in urging Iran to use its influence more positively to promote peace in the wider region, including in relation to events in Iraq and the Israel/Palestine conflict. The human rights situation within Iran, and in particular the regime’s harsh treatment of political dissidents and minorities, was also raised by Committee Members.”
