Good Friday Committee to travel to Armagh to meet NSMC and local businesses

9 Iúil 2014, 17:02

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement tomorrow travels to Armagh for a series of meetings, including with the North/South Ministerial Council, Intertrade Ireland, the Lord Mayor of Armagh and City Councillors and a range of community groups. (See programme below)

10 July 2014

Chairman of the Committee Joe McHugh TD says: Outreach visits to Northern Ireland and to the border region are a key pillar of this Committee’s work. Our visit to Armagh tomorrow will afford the Committee an opportunity to view firsthand the efforts in North/South cooperation, enterprise development and community and reconciliation projects.

Our programme commences with a briefing from the Joint Secretaries of the North South Ministerial Council, a key institution established under the Good Friday Agreement. The delegation will be keen to explore with the Secretaries a range of issues in North/South cooperation that have been raised at formal meetings in recent months. These include progress on delivery of the A5 road, the Narrowwater bridge and other cross-border transport projects, fostering cooperation in the area of healthcare and bolstering the flow of students to educational institutions on either side of the border.

“The delegation will gain from a briefing by Intertrade Ireland and presentations from two companies which have benefitted from cross border cooperation. Following a meeting with the Lord Mayor of Armagh City and fellow Councillors, the Committee will engage with a range of community groups at the forefront of legacy and reconciliation work in the city and surrounding area. Conscious of Armagh’s status as the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland, the delegation is looking forward to a tour of the Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Library and Archive, which houses a number of specialist collections of national and international importance.”
