Have your say: EU Affairs Committee invites submissions on Europe-wide economic strategy

10 Iúil 2014, 16:41

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs has this afternoon issued a call for public submissions on the ‘Europe 2020 strategy’ for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

10 July 2014

The Europe 2020 strategy was launched in March 2010 as the EU's strategy for promoting smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. It aims to achieve a knowledge-based, competitive European economy while preserving the EU's social market economy model and improving resource efficiency.

The Europe 2020 strategy is built around five headline targets in the areas of employment, research and development, climate and energy, education and the fight against poverty and social exclusion.

The Committee will consider these written submissions and may decide to invite a number of contributors to public hearings should it feel that this is necessary.

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD says: “What happens at European Union level plays an integral role in all our lives and, as a Committee, we are keen to assess the Union’s ten year strategy for jobs and growth. Four years after launching the Europe 2020 Strategy, the European Commission is now taking stock and has launched a public consultation as part of the review process. The Committee wants interested individuals and organisations in Ireland to feed into this process.

“The purpose of this call for submissions from the public is two-fold. It is to engage with citizens and civil society in Ireland so the Committee can be furnished with the broadest range of viewpoints on this key policy strategy, prior to making a submission to the Commission. Secondly, it is to raise awareness that the Europe 2020 Strategy is being reviewed, given the Strategy’s importance in directly impacting on Ireland’s reform agenda and budgetary planning under the European Semester process.”
