Good Friday Committee gains from Armagh meetings

11 Iúil 2014, 11:59

The Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement yesterday (10 July) travelled to Armagh for a series of meetings, including with the North/South Ministerial Council, Intertrade Ireland, the Lord Mayor of Armagh and City Councillors and a range of community groups.

11 July 2014

Chairman of the Committee Joe McHugh TD says: “Sixteen years on from the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, it is of paramount importance and great value to take stock of what has been achieved and, equally, of what is left to do.

“Symbolically significant projects such as the Peace Bridge in Derry/Londonderry crystalise the progress made in the peace process to date. High visibility, tangible projects such as the bridge serve as milestones and markers along the way. They allow us to trace a concrete narrative of peace and reconciliation. For these reasons, it is, of course, important that we maintain a focus on major cross-border infrastructure projects.

“Equally, though, we must take great care to acknowledge and commend the less tangible- but equally valuable- cross-border work that goes on on a day-to-day basis. To this end, meetings and discussions with community leaders from organisations such as React and Men’s Sheds and with entrepreneurs working in cross-border, cross-community business relationships alongside Intertrade Ireland allow us to recognise work that goes on under-the-radar and to make a complete and accurate inventory of cross-border initiatives.”
