Education Committee to consider provision of therapy services in schools

15 Iúil 2014, 15:48

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow to consider the provision of therapy services for children with special needs in educational settings with a range of stakeholders.

15 July 2014

Representatives from the National Council for Special Education and the Health Service Executive will appear before the Committee.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy says: “The Committee is aware of reports that in certain parts of the country, problems relating to timely access to adequate therapy services have arisen.   These may have arisen from both organisational issues as well as pressure on HSE resources.   The Committee is concerned that delays in providing adequate therapy services may have long term repercussions on the educational development of children with special needs. The engagement with the NCSE and the HSE will afford Committee Members an opportunity to assess how the difficulties relating to therapy services can be addressed, and how those services can be developed.”

The meeting takes place at 1pm tomorrow Wednesday 16 July in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
