Public Service Oversight to consider Ombudsman report on End of Life care

16 Iúil 2014, 09:44

Ombudsman Peter Tyndall appears before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions this afternoon to outline a recently published report on end of life care.

16 July 2014

The report, A Good Death: A Reflection on Ombudsman Complaints about End of Life Care in Irish Hospitals, was published on 27 June.

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD says: “We look forward to engaging with Ombudsman Peter Tyndall on what is an important report for all those who care for the dying in our health system. The report makes a number of recommendations on the basis of complaints received by the Office of the Ombudsman, and Mr Tyndall points out that it is often small things that make a big difference at the end of the life of a loved one. The report points out that poor communication between healthcare staff and patients and their families is at the root of most of the complaints received by the Ombudsman’s Office relating to end of life care. Tomorrow’s meeting will provide an opportunity for our Committee to examine how our health service can be improved and enhanced in this sensitive area.”

The meeting takes place this afternoon (Wednesday 16 July) in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
