The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow meets with the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD for an update on spending in her Department so far in 2014.

The Department of Social Protection is the highest spending government department, with €20.2 billion spent in 2013, and an estimated outturn of €19.6 billion for 2014. The meeting is expected to cover spending in the following areas:
- Pensions
- Working Age - Income Supports
- Working Age - Employment Supports
- Illness, Disability, Carers
- Children
- Supplementary Payments, Agencies, Miscellaneous
- Exchequer Subvention to the Social Insurance Fund and Administration
Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy says: “Oireachtas Committees in this Dáil term have an important role in year-round scrutiny of government estimates. We look forward to engaging with Minister Burton on current spending in her Department for 2014 and how it compares to outturn in 2013. Tomorrow’s meeting with Minister Burton will provide an opportunity for the Committee to assess how spending targets this year are being met. Pre-Budget engagement is also an important component of this Committee’s work and we will wish to explore, in broad terms, how the improving financial outlook will impact on the Minister’s approach to the negotiations for Budget 2015.”
The meeting takes place at 1pm tomorrow Wednesday 17 September in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.
