Transport Committee to engage with Chair Designate of Dublin Bus

22 MFómh 2014, 13:16

The Chairman Designate of the Dublin Bus Ultan Courtney will appear before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow 23 September.

22 September 2014

The Dublin Bus employs 3,238 full time members of staff and carries 118 million passengers per year on its 900 buses.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Under the Programme for Government, those who are being proposed for appointment as chairpersons of State boards are required to make themselves available to the appropriate Oireachtas Committee. Tomorrow, we will have the opportunity to hear from Ultan Courtney on the approach he proposes to take should he be appointed to the Chairman of Dublin Bus.

“Dublin buses remain the workhorses for our capital’s public transport system and we look forward to engaging with Mr Courtney on the challenges ahead for the company. As a Committee, we will be keen to explore how falling passenger numbers and a reduction in the state subvention in recent years has impacted on the financial sustainability of the company. Committee Members may also wish to explore the implications for the company of the National Transport Authority’s decision to place ten percent of Dublin’s bus routes out to tender in 2016. Following tomorrow’s discussion, a transcript of the meeting will be forwarded for the consideration of the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe TD.”

The meeting commences tomorrow Tuesday 23 September at 2 pm (this one hour later than originally scheduled). It will be broadcast on the new dedicated Oireachtas TV Channel on UPC 207 and Sky 574. It also can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
