Education Committee to meet Minister on review of Department spending

23 MFómh 2014, 15:28

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow meets with the Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan for an update on spending in her Department so far in 2014. Minister of State at the Department Damien English TD will also be in attendance.

23 September 2014

The Department of Education and Skills is expected to spend €7.8 billion in 2014. The meeting will cover Department expenditure in 2014, which falls under the following four main expenditure headings:

  •     1st, 2nd and Early Years Education
  •     Skills Development
  •     Higher Education
  •     Capital Services

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy says: “Oireachtas Committees in this Dáil term have an important role in year-round scrutiny of government estimates. We look forward to engaging with Minister O’Sullivan and Minister of State English on current spending in the Department for 2014 and how it compares to outturn in 2013. Committee Members may wish to raise current issues of concern, including pupil teacher ratios, the use of JobBridge to fill essential vacancies in the education system, the performance of the SUSI grant system, and progress with the Department’s capital programme. The presence of both Ministers will also allow us to assess the broad approach to Budget 2015 negotiations in the area of education.”

The meeting takes place at 1pm tomorrow Wednesday 24 September in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
