Public Service Oversight Committee to consider role of Pensions Ombudsman

23 MFómh 2014, 16:46

The Pensions Ombudsman Paul Kenny will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions tomorrow afternoon to discuss the role of his office.

23 September 2014

The Pensions Ombudsman investigates and decides complaints and disputes from individuals in relation to pension or retirement schemes and awards redress where maladministration has resulted in financial loss.

Chairman of the Committee Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD says: “As part of its remit, the Committee regularly engages with statutory oversight bodies such as the Office of the Pensions Ombudsman. Tomorrow we will have the opportunity to examine the work of Mr Kenny and his office in resolving complaints in relation to pension schemes. Completely independent and impartial, the stated aim of the Pension Ombudsman is to deal with complaints impartially, informally and quickly. The Committee will be keen to assess particular trends in Mr Kenny’s caseload, and if policy change in the area is required. Last year, the Government decided that the Office of the Pensions Ombudsman and the  Financial Services Ombudsman Bureau would amalgamate and the Committee will wish to explore how the merger is progressing.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow afternoon Wednesday 24 September in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
