Transport Committee to engage with key stakeholders on implications of new ports legislation

23 MFómh 2014, 15:19

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow undertake pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2014.

23 September 2014

The Bill sets out to transfer control of five ports of regional significance - Drogheda, Dún Laoghaire, Galway Harbour Company, New Ross and Wicklow - to the relevant local authorities.

Addressing the meeting will be:

  •     Pat Mangan, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport;
  •     Philomena Poole, Chief Executive, Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council;
  •     Simon McKeever, Irish Exporters Association, and
  •     Eamon Bradshaw, Galway Harbour Company

Access General Scheme on the Department website.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Pre-legislative scrutiny is designed to strengthen the legislative process in the Houses of the Oireachtas. It allows for input from Oireachtas members into legislation at an early stage, in particular providing the Heads of the Bill to Oireachtas committees and giving those committees the opportunity and time to examine and consult on the topic. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to assess the Heads of the General Scheme of the Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2014 with relevant stakeholders.”

The meeting commences at 9:30 am tomorrow Wednesday 24 September in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. It can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
