Agriculture Committee to meet Department Officials on HRI Bill

7 DFómh 2014, 13:49

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will tomorrow meet with officials from the Department of Agriculture to follow up on issues raised by stakeholders on upcoming horse racing legislation.

7 October 2014

Over a series of meetings throughout June, July and September, the Committee conducted pre-legislative scrutiny of the Horse Racing Ireland (Amendment) Bill 2014. The Bill seeks to amend and extend the Irish Horseracing Industry Act 1994, the Horse and Greyhound Racing Act 2001, the Animal Remedies Act 1993 to promote good governance and administration of Irish horse racing and related matters.

Access Draft General Scheme via the Department of Agriculture website.

Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle says: “In amending and extending a number of Acts, this Bill sets out to reform the role and functions of Horse Racing Ireland (HRI), which is the governing body of horse racing on the island of Ireland. Following detailed discussion with a wide range of stakeholders, Committee Members will be keen to raise some of the key concerns about the draft legislation with Department Officials. Following this meeting, the Committee will publish its report on the pre-legislative phase, which will reflect the positive engagement with a wide range of stakeholders on this important piece of legislation for Ireland’s horseracing industry.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 8 October at 10:30 am in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. It can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
