Communications Committee to consider broadband delivery and mobile coverage in rural areas

7 DFómh 2014, 12:21

Representatives from ComReg and Officials at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications for a discussion on broadband delivery and mobile coverage in rural areas.

7 October 2014

The Communications Regulator (ComReg) representatives will outline their work as the statutory body responsible for the regulation of the electronic communications sector, while the Department Officials will update the Committee on progress in the implementation of National Broadband Plan.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Tomorrow’s engagement is the first in a series of meetings which will explore how rural broadband and mobile coverage can be enhanced. While major urban centres in Ireland boast relatively strong connectivity, Committee Members are concerned at the gaps in mobile and broadband infrastructure in smaller urban and rural areas - where about half our citizens reside.  There is a direct correlation between high quality connectivity and competitiveness and the Committee will be keen to assess progress on ensuring businesses and households in all areas of the country can avail of high quality internet and mobile connections.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 8 October at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
