PAC to consider Údarás na Gaeltachta accounts

8 DFómh 2014, 16:19

The Committee of Public Accounts will tomorrow consider Údarás na Gaeltachta expenditure in 2013, when it meets with Chief Executive Stiofán Ó Cúláin and other senior managers at the Authority.

8 October 2014

Máire Killoran, Director of Irish, and Beirtí Ó hAinmhire, Principal Officer at the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will also be in attendance.

Key issues which the PAC are expected to explore tomorrow include:

  •     Operations at Údarás, including the cost of each job produced
  •     The sale of State Company Arramara Teo to a Canadian company
  •     Financial discrepencies in Muintereas Teo, a subsidiary that operates childcare facilities

Committee Chairman John McGuinness TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting will see the PAC examine the 2013 accounts of Údarás na Gaeltachta, which received approximately €34 million in Exchequer funding that year. With 7,649 employed in client companies, the Committee will be keen to assess the average cost to the State per post. We will also wish to explore what challenges face Údarás in terms of job creation.

“The sale of state seaweed company Arramara Teo to a Canadian company will also be on the agenda. Committee Members will wish to assess why the state company was sold, how the sale promotes economic development in the Gaeltacht region, and whether, given the sale wasn’t publically advertised, the sale price was maximised. The Committee will also hear from Department Officials on plans for a new licence to cut seaweed, and will examine how this will impact of those who traditionally cut seaweed in rural coastal communities. ”

The meeting takes place tomorrow 9 October in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 at 10 am. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
