The Ceann Comhairle, Seán Barrett TD accompanied the Speakers of Poland, Lithuania, Sweden and Denmark on a one day visit today to Kiev in advance of elections in the Ukraine on the 26 October 2014. This visit was at the initiative of the Marshal of the Polish Senate. The group had separate meetings with the President of Ukraine, the Prime Minister and also the Speaker of the Parliament.
Speaking at the conclusion of the visit, the Ceann Comhairle said, \"I fully support this visit today and I believe that it was necessary to show the people of the Ukraine that their parliamentary system is recognised and supported by the Parliaments of Europe\".
