EU Affairs Committee to continue Europe 2020 engagement with key stakeholders

15 DFómh 2014, 14:25

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow continue its engagement with key stakeholders on their submissions on the Europe 2020 Strategy, the EU strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

15 October 2014

Addressing the Committee will be:

  •     Councillors Patrick McGowan, John Sheehan, Maria Byrne and Neale Richmond representing the Committee of the Regions;
  •     Neale Richmond and Joe Bishop of the European Movement Ireland; and
  •     Barbara Gerstenberger of Eurofound.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan continues: “Earlier this year the Committee invited submissions from the public on the mid term review of the Europe 2020 strategy. The Committee looks forward to engaging with the Committee of the Regions (CoR), the European Movement Ireland and Eurofound and exploring the distinct perspectives of their submissions. The Committee sees this engagement as vitally important in their examination of the Europe 2020 strategy and its ability to deliver on its targets and overall objective of smart, sustainable inclusive growth.  The Committee will submit its views to the European Commission on this issue in the coming weeks.

“The CoR is an advisory body which represents local and regional government in the EU policy formation and decision-making processes; the European Movement Ireland is an independent, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation working to develop the connection between Ireland and Europe; while Eurofound is an EU-funded agency which provides knowledge to assist in the development of social and work-related policies.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow 16 October at 2pm. Public proceedings can be followed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
