Health & Children Committee to focus on Ebola virus threat

15 DFómh 2014, 14:11

The emerging situation for Ireland in relation to the Ebola virus and preparations to deal with a potential outbreak of the Ebola virus will be the focus of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children tomorrow, Thursday, 16th October 2014 when it meets with Minister for Health Leo Varadkar TD and Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “People are naturally apprehensive about the possible spread of this Ebola virus and we are aware that the cabinet has met discuss the disease and its potential to spread to other countries, including Ireland. It is important that people’s fears about a potential outbreak of the virus are allayed and calmed. Tomorrow, we will meet with the Minister and the Chief Medical Officer to discuss the preparations that are being put in place in Ireland to deal with any threat from the disease and to ensure the proper health infrastructure is ready to treat an outbreak of the virus here.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 11.30am tomorrow, Thursday, 16th October 2014.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
