Agriculture Committee to hear Bord na gCon on Indecon Report

Representatives from Bord na gCon will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine tomorrow to consider the recent Indecon report into realising the potential of the greyhound industry.

Phil Meaney, Chairman and Geraldine Larkin CEO, will be addressing the Committee.

The Review of Certain Matters Related to Bord na gCon was published in July. The independent study was commissioned by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. These include the report’s:

Assessment of the appropriateness of the existing legislation in the current operating environment, particularly with regard to the governance of Bord na gCon;
Evaluation of whether the current structure and size of the Board and management of Bord na gCon are appropriately designed to ensure that the organisation operates efficiently and effectively, in order to maximize the potential of the industry;
Consideration of whether there are opportunities to increase the commercial income of Bord na gCon.
Examination of the appropriateness of the systems operated by Bord na gCon with regard to the regulation of the industry and also the welfare of greyhounds.
Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle says: “The greyhound industry is an important economic driver in many rural areas of the country and key to the Committee’s deliberations with Bord na gCon representatives will be to ensure that that a vibrant future for the sector can be secured. The Indecon Report, published in July, will provide the basis for the discussions. With the PAC already examining the any exposure to the Exchequer, our Committee will assess the wider policy issues raised in the report, such as those in relation to legislation, governance, regulation and commercial aspects of the organisation.”
