Representatives of Inland Fisheries Ireland will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow to discuss the depletion of fish stocks in Ireland's inland waterways. The discussions are likely to have a particular focus on the impact of poaching at estuaries.
Inland Fisheries Ireland is the state agency responsible for the protection, management and conservation of Ireland's inland fisheries and sea angling resources, and falls under the remit of the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Tomorrow’s engagement will be a valuable opportunity to engage with Inland Fisheries Ireland on the levels of fish stocks in Ireland's lakes, rivers and estuaries. The IFI works to ensure the protection and conservation of our valuable fisheries resource, with emphasis on both the fish and their habitats. As such, we will have a particular interest in examining the adverse impact of poaching on the ecosystem of our estuaries, and the agency's ongoing work in curbing these practices.\"
The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 22 October at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting can be viewed online here.
