Statement by Agriculture Committee following meeting with Irish Greyhound Board

21 DFómh 2014, 18:16

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine today hosted members of the Irish Greyhound Board in their meeting to facilitate a discussion on the future of the Irish Greyhound industry on foot of a recent report on the matter authored by Indecon. The industry has suffered a significant downturn in its turnover over the last few years, driven primarily by the economic recession. Nonetheless, the Board has noted a number of recommendations in the report to drive improvements in the industry, including advice to expand the number of members on the Board to accommodate additional skillsets needed. The reply of the Irish Greyhound Board to the Indecon report is available on their website.

Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle says that ‘The report and the discussions today are part of an ongoing process to unlock the potential of the Irish Greyhound Industry. The Indecon report serves as a useful roadmap for the industry and the Committee will consider the issue further in due course. It is timely in advance of the publication of the Greyhound Industry (Amendment) Bill due to be published in 2015.
