New Palliative care hub provides an indispensable resource across island - Good Friday Committee Chairman

29 DFómh 2014, 12:00

A new all island website will become the “go-to” resource for palliative care on both sides of the border, according to the Chair of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement Frank Feighan TD.

29 October 2014

Deputy Feighan was launching a new state-of-the-art website, spearheaded by the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care, which seeks to assist parents, guardians, carers and the wider public in understanding what children’s palliative care is and helps filter the wide range of information available on the internet.

The launch of www.cypph.com took place in the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin this afternoon (Wednesday 29 October).

The All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care was formally established in October 2010, and the  17 Member organisations involved reflect a broad range of expertise in the service delivery, academic preparation for and management of hospice and palliative care across the island of Ireland.

Deputy Feighan says: “As a relatively recently appointed Chair, it gives me great pleasure to launch this website as it goes to the heart of what I believe the work of that our Committee should focus on. All-island, cross border cooperation in key, strategic areas makes sense, especially as both parts of the island are dealing with the aftermath and demands of the financial crisis. In the area of health, this is particularly true as illness does not recognise borders and our response to illness should not either.

“It would be impossible to underestimate the importance of shared experiences and collective learning in this area – from the comfort of knowing that you are not alone to the sharing of practical information on services available on both sides of the border. The fact that the website is an all-island initiative is hugely significant for the populations of the island, North and South, in particular for the families and carers of children and young people with life-limiting conditions. I very much hope that this website will quickly become a point of contact for information and a sign post to relevant, up-to-date knowledge for the families and carers of children and young people across the island.”
