EPA Chief Executive to appear before Environment Committee

3 Samh 2014, 11:06

The current role, duties and responsibilities of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be the focus of the Committee on the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht when it meets with the agency’s Director General Laura Burke tomorrow, Tuesday, 4th November 2014.

3rd November 2014

EPA monitoring and enforcement of licences at industrial facilities will also be on the agenda.

Michael McCarthy TD, Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, said: “The Environmental Protection Agency is at the front line of environmental protection and policing to ensure that Ireland's environment is protected. From August this year it was also given responsibility for ensuring that the people of Ireland are protected from the harmful effects of radiation. Among its wide range of functions and responsibilities to protect the environment are: environmental licensing; enforcement of environmental law; environmental planning, education and guidance; monitoring, analysing and reporting on the environment; regulating Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions; and radiological protection. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to consider in greater detail the work, role, duties and responsibilities of the EPA, as well as discussing the monitoring and enforcement of licences at industrial facilities.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.15pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 4th November 2014.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
